TODAY’S GAMES

HIGHLIGHTS

– David Beckham’s curling free kick sneaked into the left side of the goal just inside the post, giving England its 1-0 win over Ecuador. The English made the quarterfinal in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday.

– Maniche scored in the 23rd minute for the only goal in Portugal’s win over the Netherlands. In a rough game with a record-tying 16 yellow cards, Pauleta touched the ball to Maniche, who skipped inside a defender and shot right-footed past goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar from 16 yards.

STARS

England captain David Beckham scored on a 25-yard free kick for the only goal in a 1-0 win over Ecuador. Beckham took sick during the second half, vomiting on the field before being removed late in the game at Stuttgart.

Ricardo Pereira faced nine shots on goal and none got past him in Portugal’s 1-0 victory over the Netherlands at Nuremberg.

HISTORY

The 16 yellow cards, including four players being ejected, in the Portugal-Netherlands match tied the World Cup record set four years ago by Germany and Cameroon. The Portuguese lost Deco and Costinha with double yellows, while the Dutch saw Khalid Boulahrouz and Giovanni Van Bronckhorst get thrown out.

There have been 23 red cards in 52 matches, the most expulsions in any World Cup.

GOAL OF THE DAY

After Edwin Tenorio fouls Frank Lampard outside the Ecuador penalty area in the 60th minute, David Beckham lines up from 25 yards, slightly on the left wing. His right-footed free kick goes over the four-man Ecuadorean defensive wall and begins curving down and left. Goalkeeper Cristian Mora dives to his right and gets his right fingertips on the ball at the goalpost as the ball settles into the net.

LOOK AHEAD

Australia, perhaps the biggest surprise qualifier for the second round in its first World Cup since 1974, plays one of the regulars at the top of international soccer. The Italians have survived injuries and the match-fixing scandal back home, getting strong play from the defense and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. But the Aussies have displayed an ability to score behind Harry Kewell and Tim Cahill, and won’t be a pushover at Kaiserslautern.

Switzerland won Group G and is the only team not to yield a goal thus far. The Swiss have gotten just enough offense from Alexander Frei, while Ukraine did plenty of scoring after an opening 4-0 loss to Spain. Switzerland must slow down star striker Andriy Shevchenko at Cologne.

QUOTABLE

“We’ve got to overcome this because there will be other days like this. We make things hard for ourselves.” – David Beckham on England’s performances thus far in the World Cup.
