RUMFORD – Art enthusiasts have another option to buy locally produced art.

On Friday, a new exhibit at Pennacook Art Center Cooperative featured prints of original works created by several local artists.

The difference in cost can be substantial, said art center director Betsy Bell.

Original paintings that cost between $175 and $450 are available from $45 to $250 for framed and matted prints.

“This will expand our range of prices,” she said Friday afternoon during the reception for the exhibit.

The framed prints are not limited editions, but open editions, she said. That means any number of prints can be made from one original painting.

“We will still mainly feature originals, but prints will always be available,” she said.

Some originals will be printed using the giclee method, a French word meaning pigment. These are more colorfast and aren’t as subject to fading as inkjet prints.

Others use the inkjet method, which provides a wider color range, said Bell. Both methods use digital technology when reproducing paintings.

Prior to digital, Bell said off-set printing presses were used to duplicate paintings.

Carole Rickards, a Peru artist, has been selling prints of her work, which focuses on nature, for about 15 years at art shows and from home.

“I’m thrilled to have prints here. It gives customers and the gallery more options,” she said.

Bell said a reception for a new, featured exhibit will be held on the first Friday of each month. Some will present informative presentations or demonstrations, such as fiber arts, flower arranging or digital photography.

Pennacook is a non-profit organization operated by volunteers and artists. The gallery is located on Congress Street and is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from noon until 5 p.m. Receptions begin on the first Friday of each month at 5 p.m. and run until 8 p.m.
