ANDOVER, N.H. (AP) – State environmental officials are investigating logging that muddied Highland Lake and two brooks.
Officials are concerned the silt and sediments could endanger wildlife and water quality.
The state Department of Environmental Services is investigating and the Division of Forest and Lands has fined one operator.
Doug Miner, a forest ranger, said logger Richard Lyons Jr. had laid logs across the bed of an intermittent stream to create a crossing for his skids. Miner said that would have been fine in normal weather but heavy rains caused the stream to rise and wash over the logs, flushing mud on them downstream.
Miner issued a cease and desist order to Lost Cloud Forest Management, which hired Lyons to do the logging.
Miner also told the company to put hay bales and silt fencing to catch runoff. He fined the company $300 for not having the proper permits to cross the stream.
