GREENFIELD, N.H. (AP) -Two kayakers rescued a man and four children after their canoe tipped over on Otter Lake in Greenfield State Park.

Police said the accident could have been a tragedy, but two kayakers paddled over to the screaming children and man and helped them hold on to the kayaks while they paddled toward shore. The man from the canoe went under several times, but the kayakers repeatedly pulled him to the surface.

Police Chief Brain Giammarino said the man was unconscious when he reached the beach, but was alert when he was taken to the hospital. He was canoeing with his girlfriend’s children when the boat capsized Saturday.

Giammarino says in the confusion, no one got the kayakers’ names – they just high-fived each other and left.
