LEWISTON – The YWCA of Central Maine has recently learned of three scholarships that are available for students enrolled in college and graduate programs in the fall of 2006.

The scholarship funds are available to YWCA “family members” who need educational assistance. To be eligible as a family member of the YWCA, one must be either a member of the organization or a staff member.

The YWCA seeks applications for the scholarships from individuals who are committed to the elimination of racism and the empowerment of women. The scholarships will be awarded for the fall. Eligibility criteria are as follows:

The Asiatic Studies Fellowship is awarded for the education and training of an individual of any geographically Far Eastern country or a YWCA member or leader interested in sustaining the Asian culture. Up to five scholarships of $10,000 will be awarded.

The Grace Dodge Fellowship awards scholarships to fund graduate study for a YWCA professional staff member. Up to three scholarships of $3,125 will be awarded.

The Barbara Locke Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to fund graduate education in social work specifically majoring in community organization, administration or group work. The scholarship requires a commitment to return to or continue community support of the local YWCA affiliate. Up to two scholarships of $3,300 will be awarded.

Applications must be submitted in writing or facsimile to: YWCA USA, Attn: 2006 Scholarships, 1015 18th Street, N.W., Suite 1100, Washington, D.C. 20036, Fax: (202) 467-0802. On-line applications will not be accepted.

Deadline for applications is July 31, 2006. To obtain an application, contact Anne Craigs at the YWCA of Central Maine at 795-4050 or pick up an application form at the Customer Service Desk at 130 East Ave.
