Art reception
NORWAY – The Commons Art Collective Group Show will be held Aug. 4 to 26, with an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at Fare Share Commons, 447 Main St. Featured artists will be Maya Best, Alan Day, Lori Christmastree, Om Devi Reynolds, Sarah Shepley, Misha Tomic and Scott Vlaun.
Grange meeting
WEST PARIS – Franklin Grange 124 will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at the hall, 4 Church St.
Legion sale
BUCKFIELD – The John D. Long Post 58, American Legion, will hold a yard sale from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at the post home. There will be hot dogs, munchies and cold drinks on sale.
Indian event
OXFORD – The Oxford Congregational Church invites the people of the area to join them in attending the Indian Powwow at the Gray Animal Farm on Saturday, Aug. 12. A car caravan will meet at 8 a.m. at the church. There will be a special group rate for admission at $2.50 each. A head count will help determine how much food will need to be ordered. Church supper
SUMNER – The Congregational Church of East Sumner on Route 219 will have a chicken pie supper at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12. The menu will include chicken pie, mashed potato, gravy, peas, coleslaw, rolls, dessert, punch and coffee. Cost for adults is $7; children under 12, $3. It is handicapped accessible.
Library program
WATERFORD – The Waterford Library will host “Dana and Friends,” featuring Dana Perkins, a professional ventriloquist and magician who performs throughout New England, at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12.
When not on the road doing shows, Perkins is a graphic designer for the Journal Tribune newspaper in Biddeford. His act has several puppets including a giant bird named “Pee Wee,” who is almost as tall as Perkins.
In addition to his puppet friends, Perkins will present juggling, paper-cutting and magic tricks. He was born in Portland and grew up in Massachusetts and Maine. He began learning magic tricks in grade four, ventriloquism in grade seven, and did his first show while in junior high school.
The program is for adults, teenagers and children ages 5 or older. The Waterford Library is located on routes 35/37 in Waterford Flat near the old town hall on Keoka Lake.
Book sale
WEST PARIS – The annual summer book sale will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Little Castle Library.
Martineau reunion
DIXFIELD – The descendants of Joseph and Blanche Boivin Martineau held their sixth family reunion on July 22 at Mountain View Campground. Marcel and Nila Martineau hosted the 60 members present, with nine of the 11 family members. There also were two members of the fourth generation, Jacob Sinclair of Mexico and Jocelyn Wood of Sabattus.
Leah Girardin of Presque Isle was in charge of entertaining the children. They did crafts, played games and won prizes. A buffet lunch was served at 12:30 p.m.
Family members came from Dunnellon, Fla.; Glen Allen, Va.; Toms River, N.J.; Raymond, Derry and Berlin, N.H.; Weymouth and Newburyport, Mass.; Sabattus, Westbrook, Standish, Presque Isle, Gray, Canton, Jay, Dixfield, Mexico and Yarmouth. Guest ages ranged from oldest, Joe Martineau, 78, of Dixfield; to youngest, Ashlee Stec, 3, of Toms River, N.J.
The next reunion will be in July of 2008 with Pam and Jason Fontaine of Gray, next year’s committee.
