FARMINGTON – Fern is a wonderful cat who has been at the Franklin County Animal Shelter way too long, say staff.

She arrived at the shelter as one of four kittens with her mother. All of Fern’s family was adopted, leaving her behind. Fern became ill and lived in the room for cats that are regaining their health, keeping her out of the public eye and extending her stay at the shelter.

In that room Fern became upset with the other cats, leading staff to believe that she hated other cats. A few months ago Fern was taken into foster care and while there has shown her true personality. Fern does not hate other cats.

The greatest thing about Fern is how friendly and adorable she is, said staff. She is a petite cat, and although she arrived at the shelter in 2004, she appears to be kitten size. Fern loves to lay on laps and purr. She had to be returned to the shelter because her foster family was moving out of state.

Black Licorice is this month’s flavor and all adult black cats will have an adoption fee of $35. However, Tracy York, a member of the community, will cover the adoption fee this week. For more information, call the shelter at 778-2638.

Shelter staff will be at the Meeting House Park on Saturday, Aug. 12, for the annual Fun in the Park. The shelter will celebrate many one- and two-year anniversaries of feline friends. Staff will have a bake sale, face-painting and other fun activities for the whole family.
