BANGOR (AP) – A Windham police officer was hospitalized in Bangor after being shot in a tent on a family outing over the weekend.

Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said 36-year-old Matthew Cyr was at his family’s camp on Millinocket Lake outside Millinocket on Friday night, sleeping in a tent, when he was shot in the right leg with his own gun.

No immediate word on who fired the gun. McCausland said a nephew was also in the tent.

Cyr was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he underwent surgery Saturday. He was listed in good condition Sunday.

McCausland said there were no indications that the shooting was anything but accidental, but that investigators were waiting to interview Cyr himself.

According to WCSH-TV, Cyr is a community service officer in Windham, where he has been on the force for 11 years and is involved in the DARE program.
