GREENVILLE (AP) – Onlookers tried in vain to rescue a Florida woman whose pickup truck plunged into Moosehead Lake.
The accident that claimed the life of summer resident Linda Brown on Thursday was seen by a dozen people near the municipal pier.
Brown’s truck careened down Pleasant Street, smashed through a barricade, and ended up submerged in about 15 feet of water. Bystanders tried to reach her, but were unsuccessful, said Greenville Police Chief Duane Alexander.
The pickup was removed from the lake and will be examined by a state police mechanic.
“We think it’s a mechanical problem,” Alexander said.
The state medical examiner’s office on Friday cited drowning as the cause of death for Brown, of Singer Island, Fla.
