BOSTON (AP) – The Boston Bruins have re-signed their top scorer from last season, center Patrice Bergeron, to a multi-year contract. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Bergeron, 21, had 31 goals and 42 assists last season to become the youngest player in team history to record a 30-goal season. He has 47 goals and 65 assists in his two years with Boston.

The Bruins selected Bergeron 45th overall in the 2003 NHL draft.

“Patrice is an outstanding young player with a tremendous future,” Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said Tuesday in a statement announcing the signing. “He is an offensive threat every time he is on the ice, has great defensive instincts and he plays a physical game without taking a lot of penalties.”

The 6-foot, 197-pound center from Sillery, Quebec, played for Canada in three world tournaments.

Bergeron and Chiarelli planned a news conference Wednesday. A team spokeswoman said neither was available for comment Tuesday.
