MONMOUTH – After two years of planning and dreaming, the Davis family’s vision finally came true when it opened its restaurant earlier this month.

The Rain Forest Restaurant, at 750 Main St., offers a family dining atmosphere with a unique theme.

“The decor is based around a rain forest,” part-owner Kyle Davis said. “It is a tribute to home.”

Davis has been in the restaurant business for 15 years and is excited about opening his first restaurant with his grandfather, Richard Davis. The two moved from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., to open the restaurant.

Richard Davis, who is originally from the Winthrop area, said he was tired of retirement and decided to open a restaurant with his grandson.

The restaurant celebrated its grand opening Saturday and had exotic animals from the Domestic Exotic Wild Animal Kingdom of Mount Vernon there to welcome the crowd.

Outside the restaurant, a capuchin monkey, a baby black leopard and a binturong named Felix captured patrons’ attention. The endangered binturong species, found in Asia, hangs in forest canopies and feasts on plant life, eggs and rodents.

“We thought it would be nice to bring something different to the community,” Kyle Davis said. “And it was a great way to celebrate our grand opening.”

The menu boasts 87 items, ranging from Long Island duck to hamburgers and fries. Palm trees line the restaurant, and artificial animal cries echo off the walls.

The eatery is open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Live music by the Lewiston-based band Magic of Blues is offered on Fridays and Saturdays.
