NEW YORK – Ryan Howard hit his NL-leading 45th home run and made a key diving stop as the Philadelphia Phillies ended the New York Mets’ seven-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory Friday night.

Randy Wolf and the Philadelphia bullpen also stopped the Mets’ 11-game winning string at Shea Stadium, their best streak at home since September 1995.

Howard drove in three runs, giving him a league-leading 117 RBIs. He had a sacrifice fly in the first inning and hit a two-run homer in the third.

Astros 5, Pirates 1

PITTSBURGH – Roger Clemens limited the Pirates to one run over six innings to win his fourth in a row, extending his strong run of late-season pitching for the fast-fading Astros.

Clemens has pitched in the majors since 1984, but accomplished something he had never done before in 684 career starts – winning in Pittsburgh. Clemens’ 347th career victory was his first there in two starts.

Marlins 6, Brewers 5

MIAMI – Mike Jacobs drove in three runs, reliever Brian Moehler pitched four shutout innings and the Marlins rallied for their fifth consecutive win.

Jacobs doubled home a run in the first, then hit a bases-loaded double in the third to help the Marlins overcome a 5-2 deficit. Moehler (7-8) limited the Brewers to one hit after starter Ricky Nolasco lasted only two-plus innings. Milwaukee got only one hit in the final 6 1-3 innings.

Indians 4, Tigers 2

CLEVELAND – Rookie Jeremy Sowers won his third straight start with six solid innings, leading the Cleveland Indians over the suddenly staggering Detroit Tigers.

Detroit, which entered the weekend leading the AL Central by 5 games, has lost three straight, six of eight, and is just 5-12 since Aug. 8 – when the Tigers led their division by 10.

Blue Jays 6, Royals 3

TORONTO – Rookie Shaun Marcum rebounded from the worst start of his young career with six strong innings, leading Toronto.

Marcum (2-3), who allowed nine runs in a 15-0 loss to Baltimore in his last start on Aug. 19, won for the first time in six games. He allowed just one run and seven hits, while striking out four and walking two.

Orioles 4, Tampa Bay 0

BALTIMORE – Daniel Cabrera pitched seven innings of five-hit ball, and Baltimore dealt Tampa Bay its eighth straight road loss.

Ramon Hernandez drove in a run and scored twice for the Orioles.

, who have won six of nine.

Cabrera (7-8) struck out seven, walked three and allowed only one runner past second base. He has thrown 16 straight scoreless innings, including a five-hit shutout of Toronto on Saturday.

The right-hander is 3-1 since returning from the minors on Aug. 8, allowing just one run in the three wins. Chris Ray got the final five outs for his 30th save.

Rocco Baldelli had two hits and a walk for the Devil Rays, who are 1-16 on the road since the All-Star break.
