BOSTON (AP) – David Ortiz’s timetable for playing again will be assessed next week after he spends the next few days wearing a heart monitor.

The Red Sox designated hitter had a normal examination after returning from Seattle on Tuesday, one day after experiencing heart palpitations for the second time in August, the club said. The team ended a nine-game West Coast trip on Wednesday.

“David’s testing was unremarkable or normal except for changes commonly found in well-trained athletes,” the statement said.

On Thursday, Ortiz said in an interview with radio station Z-101 of his native Dominican Republic, “My health is fine. The doctors have told me to rest today and practice Friday so I can be ready to return to the playing field on Saturday.”

But general manager Theo Epstein said Thursday that estimated return was inaccurate and manager Terry Francona said the team wants to be careful about when Ortiz plays again.

Ortiz was not at Fenway Park on Thursday or Friday for the first two games of Boston’s series with Toronto.

Ortiz, the AL leader in homers and RBIs, was released from Massachusetts General Hospital on Thursday and since his return “experienced no further sensations,” the team said in a statement.

“David’s health and safety remain our primary concerns,” it said.

“The medical staff will continue monitoring David in the outpatient setting with a device called an event monitor. Further testing, if indicated, will be determined by the results of outpatient monitoring.”

The statement said the tests performed were basic laboratories, electrocardiogram, heart monitoring, echocardiogram, signal averaged electrocardiogram, stress testing, and magnetic resonance imaging and that they were reviewed extensively by heart consultants.
