HARTLAND (AP) – Investigators believe the two bodies that were burned beyond recognition in a suspicious fire were those of a divorced couple, officials said Monday.

Timothy Spaulding, 45, and his wife Linda, 44, were divorced but had been living together until Timothy Spaulding moved out a week before the fire, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

DNA is expected to be needed to establish positive identification when the state medical examiner’s office examines the remains on Tuesday, McCausland said. Detectives hope autopsies will yield answers to help them determine what happened, he said.

Investigators were unable to pinpoint the cause of the blaze but they maintain that it was suspicious.

The bodies were recovered from the rubble of a two-story building that collapsed shortly after firefighters arrived Sunday morning.

Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office determined that the fire started in the living quarters on the building’s second floor, McCausland said.
