LEWISTON – This time, Husayne Carnegie was going to make the best of it.
Earlier in the second half Tuesday, the Lewiston senior snuck behind the defense only to fire an open shot right at Oxford Hills goalkeeper Joe Rood. So when Carnegie burst by a defender late in regulation, he wasn’t going to miss a second time.
“I realized I had more time on the second one, and I took it and used it to place the shot better,” said Carnegie. “I wanted to put it to the side. The keeper is very solid at anything near him. So you just have to put it side netting to give yourself any type of chance.”
Carnegie chipped it into the right side of the net with 7:53 left in the game to lift the Blue Devils to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Vikings.
“I thought the Oxford Hills kids came out and played great,” said Lewiston coach Mike McGraw. “Then in the second half, I thought our kids came out and played great.”
Lewiston (3-1) outshot Oxford Hills 9-1 in the second half and had numerous opportunities. Carnegie had a prime chance in the opening minutes. With the net open, his shot from the left side was blocked by Mark Dunton.
“That probably would have changed the complexion of the game a little more,” said McGraw.
Instead, Lewiston continued to pluck away and hope for a shot to finish. Carnegie had a bid with 13:08 left, but Rood made the save.
“We did a good job of exploiting the holes through the defense and playing the through ball behind,” said Carnegie. “Our strikers, me in particular, did a poor job finishing, but the more opportunities you get, one of them is bound to go in.”
The Vikings (0-3) had struck first, scoring their first goal of the year. Jason Edmunds chipped a shot from the left side 12:55 into the game.
“We hadn’t played with a lead this year,” said Oxford Hills coach Bob Foster. “It was exciting to see them play with the lead.”
The Vikings held Lewiston at bay for much of the half, but the Blue Devils talent up front eventually produced an equalizer.
“They were a little fast for us up front and it caught up with us,” said Foster.
Josh Arsenault preserved the lead with 3:50 left when he cleared a ball shot toward an open Oxford Hills net, but Lewiston would tie it moments later. With 1:23 left in the first half, Mike Sarrazin’s cross from the right side was headed in by Shirmarke Hussain Ali.
“That meant a lot,” said Carnegie. “It helps to still be in the game, even when you’re not playing your best. So it gave us a lot more confidence going into the half. So that we could come out with a different mentality going into the second half.”
