RUMFORD – SAD 43 directors took no stance on the proposed Taxpayer Bill of Rights referendum question at their meeting on Monday.

Superintendent Jim Hodgkin said on Wednesday that the board was very diverse and he would not ask for an opinion. He said the Maine School Management Association has announced its opposition to the referendum question scheduled for a statewide vote on Nov. 7.

Hodgkin said he opposes the proposal because it would hurt SAD 43, as well as other districts and municipalities.

Among the requirements that would take place if the measure is passed, said Hodgkin, is a lengthening, and subsequently costlier, approval process in the development of a budget.

Also at Monday’s short meeting, Hodgkin announced a joint meeting with the Region 9 vocational school board, and boards from SAD 21, SAD 43 and SAD 44 on Oct. 11. The vocational school will unveil plans for a nearly $5 million renovation and enlargement project for the River Road school.

Several appointments were made, including: Carrie Youcis and Jeff Bailey as Civil Rights Team advisors; Jared Dumas and Jim Aylward as advisors to the Class of 2010; Briana Haynes and Sarah Beaudoin as Math Team advisors; and Aylward as the high school yearbook advisor.
