That which is used so extensively in making mince meat in New Auburn and which is also sold by the glass contrary to the law at times, it has been hinted, was seized by the Auburn police. Several complaints have been received by Marshal Rowe against Laurent Laberge, Socialist candidate for Legislature, who runs a store on Mill street, regarding the manner in which he dispensed cider at his place of business. Shortly before noon time, the marshal accompanied by Deputy Marshall Lyford, paid a visit to the store and seized all the cider in sight, 85 gallons. Laberge was told to appear before the Municipal Court this morning and explain the manner in which he had been selling the fluid. It was not a long time ago that the police in Auburn seized a large quantity of cider but lost their case, it being claimed by the respondents that all of the stuff was used in making mince pies in New Auburn.

Aroostook County’s annual “potato vacation” comes as growers move into the job of harvesting an estimated 60 million bushels of spuds. All the county’s schools of secondary or higher level except one – Aroostook State Teachers College – will close for the week to augment the harvest crews in Aroostook’s fertile farm fields.

The Senate, ending an all-male tradition nearly two centuries old, unanimously confirmed Sandra Day O’Connor as an associate justice of the Supreme Court. Mrs. O’Connor, a 51-year-old Arizona state appeals judge, will be sworn in in time to join the court for the opening of its 1981-82 term on October 5.

Officially, it has begun. So far, the opening days of fall have brought the Twin Cities a generous portion of cold, wet and windy weather forcing people to think of turning on their furnaces, lighting their woodstoves and staying indoors as much as possible.
