MONCTON, New Brunswick (AP) – Rick DiPietro and Ted Nolan got off to rough starts Friday night in the New York Islanders’ first exhibition game of the season.
DiPietro allowed three goals on 14 shots in 33 minutes in his first game since signing a $67.5 million, 15-year contract, while Nolan was behind the bench in the NHL for the first time in nine years as the Islanders fell 5-1 to the Boston Bruins.
Marc Savard, Nate Thompson, Brad Stuart, Pascal Pelletier and Martins Karsums scored for the Bruins, 3-1 in preseason play.
DiPietro, who turned 25 earlier this week, also took six minutes in penalties, including one minor for playing the puck in the forbidden zone in the corner and also an unsportsmanlike conduct call for arguing.
Mike Dunham, in camp on a tryout, played the final 27 minutes in goal for New York.
Tim Thomas made 30 saves for the Bruins, allowing only Shawn Bates’ goal.
