PARIS – The annual Memory Walk, sponsored by the Maine Alzheimer’s Association, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 7, starting at the Maine Veterans’ Home, 477 High St., South Paris. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and the four-mile walk will begin at 9 a.m.

All proceeds will benefit the Maine Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. “It is a good feeling to know that all funds raised during this walk stay in the state of Maine, to help the thousands of families caring for a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease,” said area coordinator Ellie Newell.

On that day, 14 walks will be held throughout the state. The goal of the Alzheimer’s Association is to raise $320,000. The money goes to provide education, care and support to the more than 30,000 persons in the state afflicted with the disease. Nationally, Alzheimer’s affects more than 4.5 million.

Anyone interested in helping with the project, whether it is by gathering sponsors and walking as an individual, forming a team of walkers from a workplace, donating door prizes to award to walkers or providing assistance on the day of the walk, is encouraged to call the Maine Veterans’ Home at 743-6300.

“We have a great time walking to raise money for this cause. We have families honoring their loved one who have suffered with the memory loss caused by Alzheimer’s. Often they feel that taking just a little over an hour out of their day to do this walk can make a difference in what services are made available to other families coping with this problem. Come on out and join us,” said Newell.
