GRAY – Gray-New Gloucester coach Hank Girardin sounds a lot like John Madden when he describes his team’s offense.

After seeing the Patriots pile up 296 yards on the ground, Falmouth coach Rob Grover could probably offer up a much different description.

The Patriots continually frustrated the Falmouth Yachtsmen and picked up their second win in as many weeks Friday with a 22-8 victory.

The Patriots’ multiple-back offense had the Yachtsmen spinning their heads all night long. After pounding out a few yards play after play, the Patriots would break away for a long score. Shane Beal picked up 167 yards with scoring runs of 37 and 67 yards, while Taylor Valente added 105 yards and a touchdown. His score covered 36 yards.

“It’s boom, boom, boom and then bust,” Girardin said in Madden-like description. “In that offense, it’s tough to find the football.”

“We had a six-man front to pile it up,” said Falmouth coach Rob Grover. “It’s tough to face when they send five guys through a hole and one finds the crease.”

Things started off well for the Yachtsmen (2-3) as they immediately marched down the field after the opening kickoff. Nick Ford picked up 36 yards on five carries on the possession and capped the drive with a 1-yard run up the middle. Ford, who finished with 163 yards on the ground, added the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

Gray-New Gloucester (2-3) answered with a 17-play drive but came up empty after Sam Christy’s fourth-down pass sailed out of the Falmouth end zone.

The Patriots capitalized on their second possession. On 2nd-and-7 from the Falmouth 36, Valente took a hand off up the middle and galloped 36 yards for the score. He ran past two defensive backs before they even knew he had the ball.

Moments later, the Patriots were on the offensive again after recovering a fumble by Falmouth quarterback Stephano Mancini. This time, it was Beal breaking away from 37 yards out. On a sweep to the left, he outraced Zach Bennett to the sideline and ran away from the rest of the defenders to put the home team up 15-8 with 1:05 left in the first half.

“We were opening up the middle the whole game,” said Beal. “I saw them (adjusting) and broke to the outside.”

Mancini connected with tight end Brady Frost for a pair of passes totaling 54 yards to put the Yachtsmen into the red zone in the waning seconds of the half. On the final play before intermission, Mancini rolled out right and attempted to score from 11 yards out, but he was met by sophomore defensive back Casey Kramlich near the goal line, stopping him just inches from the goal.

“It was a big play,” said Girardin. “He covered his man and then came up.”

The Yachtsmen frustrations continued into the second half. Twice their defensive line jumped offsides on third-and-short. They also fumbled the ball away two times after driving deep into Patriots territory, but the ultimate frustration came early in the fourth quarter.

The Patriots converted a pair of first downs on successive 4th-and-1 situations from deep within their own territory as Zach Parker moved the pile just enough to move the chains both times.

“With the way they were running the ball down the field we took our chances getting the yards,” said Girardin. “When you’ve got one win in two years, you go for it.”

After his second first down carry, Beal broke loose for a 67-yard score to put the game away.
