LEWISTON – Brad Young, a former Colorado legislator who supported that state’s “Taxpayer Bill of Rights” but now advocates against such legislation, will visit Bates College to discuss Maine’s proposed TABOR measure at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, in the Benjamin Mays Center, 95 Russell St.

The event is open to the public at no cost.

Colorado adopted TABOR legislation in 1992. In 2005, as a consequence of the economic slump that followed the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the state was forced to simultaneously reduce spending and refund revenue to taxpayers.

A Republican member of the Colorado House of Representatives from 1991-92 and 1996-2004, Young served as vice-chairman of the Joint Budget Committee and chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. Once a strong TABOR proponent, Young is touring several states that have this bill on their agendas to persuade voters to reject the proposition.

His appearance is sponsored by the New World Coalition, Bates Democrats, Feminist Action Coalition and Environmental Coalition, all student groups at Bates. For more information, call 207-795-5199 or e-mail [email protected].
