LEWISTON – A second day of bomb threats closed college campuses in Lewiston, Gorham and Portland, and police were following up leads in a search for the culprit.

Students and teachers evacuated all University of Southern Maine campuses Tuesday, including L-A College in Lewiston.

Police said an unidentified caller reported Tuesday afternoon that there were bombs inside the colleges and they would explode around dinnertime.

USM classrooms were cleared, and police entered the buildings with bomb-sniffing dogs at about 1:30 p.m. The bomb scares came on the heels of a similar threat phoned in to the college campus on Monday.

Police said it appeared the threats may be coming from the same person or persons, but the investigation was ongoing Monday night.

In Lewiston, all afternoon classes were canceled, but the school reopened at 6:30 p.m. after the building was deemed safe.

While the disruptions to class schedules were under way, USM officials kept its students apprised of the situation through the school storm line. A recorded message provided the latest information and advised students to check back for updates.
