MECHANIC FALLS – The town will hold an informational meeting on the TABOR initiative at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Elm Street School gymnasium.
Recognizing there are many voters who have questions about the Taxpayer Bill of Rights referendum Nov. 7, Town Manager John Hawley has organized the event.
Hawley confirmed that representatives from both sides of the debate will make themselves available to questions from the audience. Bill Becker, president and chief executive officer of the Maine Heritage Policy Center, will speak in support of TABOR. Jeff Austin, lobbyist for the Maine Municipal Association, will speak against it. Each representative will be given approximately 15 minutes for opening remarks and then the floor will be open to questions.
“We are trying to get the word out that this meeting is not just for Mechanic Falls residents” Hawley said, “but an attempt to make the information available to anyone who still doesn’t know which box to check on Election Day.”
Municipal and school representatives as well as elected legislative officials are expected to attend.
For more information or directions to the Elm Street School, phone Hawley at the Mechanic Falls town office at 345-2871.
