LEWISTON – The Maine Arts Commission is calling artists to submit proposals to design, execute and install artwork at the Farwell School Percent for Art site. Maine’s Percent for Art law reserves 1 percent of the construction funds for all state-funded building projects for artwork for the public areas of the buildings.
All professional artists may apply for consideration for the project, which has an approximate budget of $47,000 in percent for art funds, which will be used to commission work from one or more artists. The fixed amount must cover all design, fabrication, transportation, documentation and installation expenses, including any building or site modification associated with the artwork.
The new elementary school will serve prekindergarten through sixth grade and will replace the original Farwell School. The designers focused on creating a space for equity in education and are concerned with energy conservation and environmental awareness.
The committee seeks art that will excite, interest and inspire viscerally and intellectually, and encourage aspirations, and discussed themes of Lewiston’s history, the natural beauty of the area, connectivity and globalization and Lewiston’s relevancy at home and beyond.
Deadline for submission of preliminary materials is a postmarked date of Nov. 1, and materials should be mailed to: Farwell School Percent for Art Competition, c/o Donna McNeil, Maine Arts Commission, 25 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333-0025.
