How many siblings do you have? Two? Three? Five? If you lived in Trey’s world, you wouldn’t. I’m telling you of the book called “Among the Brave” by Margaret Peterson Haddix. In his world, there is an over population and every child born after the second must be killed. Trey just so happens to be one of those, an unlucky third child.
Trey was in “hiding” until his father died. Trey then got a fake identify and his mother dropped Trey off at school for boys. Trey now lives his life in fear, clutching onto his I.D. card as his only lifeline. This story starts with Trey’s friends being captured. Trey goes on a journey of a lifetime, meeting new friends, getting scared more than he has ever been, getting into lots of trouble and finding his inner bravery which brings him to a troubling decision that will either save his captured or get them all killed.
“Among the Brave’s” 299 pages are filled with twists, turns an unexpected surprises. I would strongly recommend this book as well as the other books in Margaret Peterson Haddix’s series, “The Shadow Children.”
