FARMINGTON – Elyse Cole scored twice off assists from Andrea Tyler as the University of Maine at Farmington captured the 2006 North Atlantic Conference Field Hockey Championship with a 2-1 victory over Western New England College.
In a rematch of last season’s championship game, Cole scored the first goal at the 18:14 mark as the Beavers (15-2) took a 1-0 lead into the half.
Just over 10 minutes into the second frame, Cori Eggert, the leading conference scorer, knotted the game at 1-1 for the Golden Bears. The score remained tied for just over 15 minutes until Cole scored her second of the game at the 61:06 mark.
Bowdoin 1, Amherst 0
BRUNSWICK – Lindsay McNamara scored the lone goal as Bowdoin advanced to the 2006 NESCAC championship game with a 1-0 win over Amherst in semifinal field hockey action at Ryan Field Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (14-1) were able to keep the Jeffs (8-8) shotless as Bowdoin had control of the ball in their half of the field for the majority of the game.
Kathleen Boucher had nine saves for Amherst, while Kate Leonard did not face any shots during her 70 minute in goal for Bowdoin.
Women’s soccer
Hartford 1, Maine 0
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Megan Riemer’s second half goal lifted Hartford to a 1-0 victory over the University of Maine women’s soccer team in the America East Championship game.
After a scoreless first half, Reimer scored on a loose ball at the 75:15 mark for the games lone score. Jasmine Phillips turned away four shots for the Black Bears (14-2-2) and Hartford keeper Liz Cook made one save for the shutout.
Husson 1, UMF 0
BANGOR – Tatyanna Wolterbeek’s first half goal stood as Husson College downed UMF in the womens’ soccer North Atlantic Conference Championship game.
Wolterbeek scored 2:57 into the game off a rebound for the eventual game winner. UMF (13-7) goalie Alix Raymond stopped four shots in net. Keeper Leah Drew stopped four shots for the Eagles (17-3-1) in the shutout.
Amherst 3, Bates 0
AMHERST, Mass. – Senior Amy Armstrong recorded a pair of goals as Amherst advanced to the final round of the NESCAC tournament with a 3-0 victory over the defending champions, Bates College.
The Bobcats (10-5) controlled the opening five minutes of the game but failed to put the ball home before Amherst began to apply some serious pressure.
Junior Heather Nowak sent a free kick into the Bobcats’ defensive zone, where first-year Meg Murphy ripped a shot from 20 yards out. The Ball bounced off a Bates defender and to the feet of Armstrong, who found the back of the net with a low bullet to corner to put the Lord Jeffs (12-1-1) up 1-0 with 28:56 remaining in the first half.
Amherst goalkeeper Piper Crowell made several spectacular saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season.
Women’s basketball
UMA 50, Unity 49
UNITY – Shannon McAvoy sank the game-winning field goal with three seconds remaining as the University of Maine at Augusta took a 50-49 come-from behind win over Unity College in women’s basketball action Saturday.
The Moose (1-0) were paced by Aleigh Mills and Natalie Nimon with 14 points apiece. Nimon also collected a pair of 3-pointers in the winning effort.
Kelly Young recorded a game-high 17 points for the Rams (0-1), including a pair of treys.
Men’s soccer
Williams 3, Bates 0
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Williams College got three second half goals to break a halftime scoreless tie to down Bates College 3-0 in men’s soccer NESCAC semifinal play.
Bates keeper Rob Munro made seven saves in the season ending loss finishing the season at 8-6-2. Jeff Castiglione and Greg Walker shared the shutout for Williams (13-1).
Men’s basketball
Monroe 91, CMCC 85
LEWISTON – Joe Lindsey hit a game tying 3-pointer with three seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime where Monroe Community College pulled away for a 91-85 victory over Central Maine Community College in men’s basketball.
Lindsey paced Monroe with 31 points including four three pointers. Danny Owusu added 18 points. CMCC’s Caleb Violette led all scorers with 34 points as well as pulling down 11 rebounds.
Dave Labonte also poured in 18 points in the defeat.
Fisher 100, UMA 86
BOSTON – Michael Newcombe drained a game-high 26 points to lead Fisher College to a 100-86 victory over the University of Maine at Augusta in men’s basketball action Saturday.
The Moose (0-1) kept pace in every aspect of the game except outside shooting, where the Falcons (1-0) were able to capitalize on eight field goals from beyond the arc.
Deon Cheers recorded a team-high 21 points, while Eric Sobey contributed 13 points for the Moose in the losing effort.
Hockey
Maine 2, Boston University 2
BOSTON, Mass. – The undefeated University of Maine hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Boston University in men’s ice hockey action Saturday evening.
The Black Bears (7-0-1) struck first by clawing out a pair of goals in the first period. Keenan Hopson scored just 1:36 into the contest, while Josh Soares converted a power play opportunity five minutes later.
The Terriers (2-1-3) responded with a pair of power-play goals in the second period. Matt Gilroy cut the deficit in half, while Kevin Schaeffer scored the equalizer at the 14:21 mark.
Goalie Ben Bishop made 29 saves for the Black Bears, while John Curry turned away 22 for the Terriers.
