For a man who gave so much, Deputy David Rancourt’s passing is the definition of tragedy.

Rancourt, a 10-year veteran of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department, died suddenly Saturday.

Local law enforcement should be commended for its compassion, and professionalism, following Rancourt’s passing. A cadre of officers descended on his home to support his grieving family, and plan his remembrances. When the deputies themselves needed time, other agencies absorbed their duties without question.

Thursday’s procession around Lewiston, leading into Rancourt’s funeral at Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, was a fitting tribute for a man remembered as a dedicated soldier, officer, friend and father.

A lasting image is of sheriff’s office Capt. Ray LaFrance, welling with tears, forcing out the words late Saturday that one of his men was gone. “We’re a small, family department,” LaFrance said. “Right now we’re all grieving.”

As are we. Our thoughts, and sincerest condolences, are with all those struggling with his loss.
