FARMINGTON – A special five-hour education and information day specifically for caregivers of someone with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia will be held on Monday, Dec. 4, at Franklin Memorial Hospital, sponsored by SeniorsPlus.

The intent of the Best Friends training is to assist families to gain a renewed sense of hope and confidence; provide nursing, residential and home care staff and family caregivers with effective approaches for individual care; and provide adult day center staff with enriched programming and ways to attract more volunteers.

The care approach is based on the principles, values and elements of friendship that include knowing a person’s history, doing things together, communicating, building self-esteem, laughing together, viewing friend as equal and working at the relationship.

These universal principles are applicable to anyone providing long-term care.

Facilitator will be Darlene Field, LSW, Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, education specialist.

Registration check-in will be at 9:30 a.m. and the programs will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ben Franklin Center, G.H. Bass Room, 111 Franklin Health Commons. Morning refreshments will be provided. Participants should bring a bag lunch.

There is no fee, but advance registration is required. RSVP to Kathy Brill at 1-800-427-1241, ext. 133.
