LEWISTON – A Sabattus man accused of shooting his father during a birthday celebration last month was indicted Tuesday on a charge of murder.

Scott R. Poirier has remained jailed since his arrest on Nov. 8. On Tuesday, an Androscoggin County grand jury gave prosecutors the nod to try the 34-year-old in court.

Poirier is accused of shooting his father, 65-year-old Roland Poirier, while the elder man sat at his dining-room table while celebrating his birthday with more than a dozen guests. Roland Poirier died shortly after police and emergency workers arrived at the home on Grove Street.

Scott Poirier was arrested minutes later. Police said he confessed to the crime and that he claimed he killed his father because the man had molested him and other family members when they were children.

Roland Poirier was struck in the neck by a shot fired through a sliding glass door, police said.

Hours before the shooting, Scott Poirier had become emotionally upset, punching holes in the walls of his Davis Lane home, according to his roommate, whose descriptions of the incident were included in a police affidavit.

Police believe Scott Poirier went to his father’s house with a loaded .270-caliber rifle, stood in the yard and fired through the glass door.

“Lies will end tonight,” Poirier is quoted as telling a relative in a telephone call shortly before the shooting. “Take care of my boys; I am a good dad.”

Scott Poirier has four sons. The oldest are 6-year-old twins.
