The secret to cute holiday crafts is right at your children’s fingertips. Generations of kids have recorded their childish charm for posterity (and Christmas decor) with projects that feature their adorable handprints. Here are five classics that will keep your kids happy while you decorate the mantel:
1. Handprint wreath
For this, you’ll need lots of green construction paper, some red paper and glitter glue. Trace your child’s hand on green construction paper several times (about 10 for each wreath).
Cut out the handprints. Glue them together in a wreath shape, with the wrists overlapping in the center and the fingers pointing out. Glue on a red bow (or make one from red paper), and decorate with glitter.
2. Hand- and footprint reindeer
Trace around your child’s foot using brown construction paper. (This will be the reindeer’s head.) Trace around both hands using tan construction paper. (These are the antlers.)
Glue the handprint antlers to the top of the reindeer head. Add a bright red paper nose, a drawn mouth and google eyes.
3. Handprint tree
Like the wreath, this craft requires several handprints cut from green paper. (For a sturdier version, use craft foam.) Glue the handprints together with fingertips facing down to form a tree shape. Glue on a brown trunk and gold star, and decorate with sequins, glitter or circles of paper.
Cute option: Glue a photo of your child in the center of the tree, add a string up top, and you’ve got a keepsake ornament.
4. Handprint angel
Similar to the reindeer, this angel has a footprint body and two handprint “wings.” Use a cutout photo of your child for the angel’s face. Add a pipe-cleaner halo, a string for hanging and the following poem (from www.dltk-kids.com), and Grandma will love it:
“This little angel is special, you see,
Because she is a part of me.
Her wings are my hands,
Her body, my feet,
And on the tree she’ll look very sweet.”
All together, now: Awwwww.
