BARTLETT, N.H. (AP) – A man who lived in the shadow of Mount Washington has left the weather observatory on the summit its largest gift ever.

Sam Goodhue of Bartlett died in August at age 84, and left the observatory more than $1.5 million.

Observatory Executive Director Scot Henley said the money will be used to build the organization’s endowment and pay operating expenses.

As a young man, Goodhue was a member of the Mount Washington Ski Patrol.

and worked on the mountain and at the Appalachian Mountain Club.
