More good news for Lewiston! It is announced that beginning Dec. 31, wages in the Lewiston cotton mills will be advanced five per cent. This comes as a New Year’s present to hundreds of employes, as the increase will make the yearly payroll thousands of dollars larger than it otherwise would be, and means much to the merchants and business men of the two cities.

Livermore Falls – Next season will see a big building boom for this place. Already the plans for 50 houses are drawn up and ten of these will be built by one company. The houses will be built all over the village and several at Newland Park.

50 Years Ago, 1956

HARPSWELL – The Rev. James E. Herrick said here today he is flying to New York the day after Christmas to try to bring a group of Hungarian refugees to Maine.

The pastor said he is working on a plan launched by Erno Balogh, a Bailey Island summer resident of Hungarian extraction. Herrick said he has in mind a colony similar to the Russian colony at Richmond.

He said he would like to see small groups of Hungarians brought to Maine “staging areas” where they would be taught English, then assimilated into the community.

25 Years ago, 1981

LEEDS – The Leeds Planning Board is considering a crack-down on roadside unauthorized junk yards. A letter from the board has been received by First Selectman Bruce Smith, asking the board to “review the legal evidence available to correct the problems of unauthorized use of public and private property (roadsides) resulting in a municipal eyesore.” The letter targeted junk cars and auto repair operations in violation of zoning regulations.
