LEWISTON – Lewiston Adult Education has planned a variety of courses specifically designed for local residents who want to prepare for college. Most of the classes will start in January.

“Essentials of College Planning for Adults” is a one-night workshop scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30. The program will be facilitated by Christy Le from the Maine Educational Opportunity Center. She will provide an overview of the admissions and financial aid application process for adults looking to enroll in college.

For those who need to build academic skills before taking on college level work, daytime and evening assistance is available. The “College Transitions Program,” taught by Ann Marie Valloti, is an award-winning program that helps adults prepare and succeed in college. Classes will be held held Monday through Wednesday at the B Street Community Center.

Other courses will include literature, “Preparation for College Writing,” algebra, “Preparation for College Math,” biology and chemistry. Most classes will be held one evening a week.

For help in completing a high school diploma or to earn a General Educational Development certificate before college is an option, the Adult Learning Center located at 145 Birch St. can help.

High school students looking for extra help getting ready for the SAT exams also have a place at Lewiston Adult Ed. A seven-week evening program is set to build confidence and test-taking skills.

Lewiston Adult Education provides free academic advising and assistance in selecting the right college prep course. All courses are open to adults in the region, but do require preregistration. Registrations will be accepted starting Tuesday, Jan. 2. For more information or to schedule an appointment with an academic adviser, call 795-4141 or visit www.lewistonadulted.org.
