SCHENECTADY, NY -Rob Stockwell tallied 19 points and 11 rebounds and was the tournament MVP, leading Bates to an 81-66 win over host Union in the championship game of the Sig Makofski Invitational Men’s Basketball Tournament Saturday.

Pat Halloran scored a team-high 20 points and Zak Ray added 13 points, 11 assists and three steals for the Bobcats (10-0). Nick DiMaggio scored a game-high 31 points for Union (3-7).

W. Conn. 68, USM 59

DANBURY, Conn. – Junior guard Jamie Procino scored a team-high 14 points to lead a well-balanced attack as Western Connecticut State trimmed Southern Maine 68-59.

Senior guard Foster Oakley paced the Huskies (4-8) with a game-high 19 points on a solid 8-for-14 effort from the floor. Junior guard Josh Daniels added 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Lesley 85, Colby 76

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior center Drew Cohen became the 32nd player in Colby College men’s basketball history to reach 1,000 career points during the Mules’ 85-76 loss to Lesley University on Saturday night.

Bowdoin 61, UMF 57

FARMINGTON – Kevin Bradley hit a key jump-shot and sealed the win with a trio of late free-throws to lift the Bowdoin College men’s basketball team to a 61-57 win over the University of Maine at Farmington Saturday.

The Polar Bears improve to 7-3 this season while the Beavers drop to 4-6.

Andrew Hippert led all players with 16 points, while Bradley and Jordan Fliegel notched 12 points apiece. Andrew Sargeantson grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for the Polar Bears, while Farmington was led by 12 points from Josh Tanguay.

Women’s basketball

USM 60, W. Conn 57

DANBURY, Conn. — Senior forward Ashley Marble scored 30 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, both career highs, to lead the sixth-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies to a narrow 60-57 win over Western Connecticut.

Earning its sixth consecutive win the Huskies improve to 10-1 overall and remain undefeated in LEC play at 3-0. The win marked the 499th career victory for Southern Maine veteran head coach Gary Fifield.

Senior guard Katie Sibley was the only other USM player to reach double figures in tossing in 15 points. Sophomore guard Stacey Kent grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Huskies to a decisive 46-30 edge on the boards.

Bowdoin 67, Emmanuel 58

BRUNSWICK – Eileen Flaherty scored a game-high 23 points, including five in the final minute of the game, to lift Bowdoin College to a 67-58 victory over Emmanuel College Saturday.

Bowdoin (11-0) led by as many as 14 points in the opening half and claimed a 32-22 edge at intermission. The Polar Bears would extend their advantage to 13 points (48-35) on a Leah Rubega layup with 8:50 remaining before the Saints (9-1) launched a late rally.

A 10-3 spurt by Emmanuel cut the Bowdoin lead to just five points, andwhen Tommia Davis hit a jump shot and was fouled with 58 seconds left, her free-throw made it a two-point contest, 60-58. But Flaherty responded for the Polar Bears, hitting a lay-up and earning a foul to push the lead back to five points. Flaherty then hit two more freebies to ice the game with 26 seconds left.

Hockey

Maine 5, UMass-Lowell 2

BILLERICA, Mass. – Freshman Teddy Purcell scored two goals for the third straight game and added an assist as Maine defeated the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, 5-2, in men’s hockey action Saturday afternoon.

The Black Bears (14-3-3) took a 3-0 lead after the first period on just nine shots. Josh Soares opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 7:48 mark with assists from Brett Tyler and Billy Ryan. Purcell made it 3-0 with back-to-back unassisted goals.

Freshman winger Jason Bergeron scored for the second straight game and his sixth on the season for the River Hawks (7-3-1) at 10:39 of the second period. Mike Potacco made it a two-goal game when he beat Black Bear goalie Ben Bishop with a shot in the slot at 11:20 in the second.

Southern Maine, Trinity tie

HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior Mark Carragher had a goal and an assist as the University of Southern Maine skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with Trinity College in men’s hockey action Saturday.

Senior Simon Dionne gave the Bantams (4-4-2) an early 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season. Senior John Halverson, who had an assist on the Dionne goal, got the game-tying power-play goal at 14:25 of the second period.

With the Huskies (6-5-1) engjoying a five-on-four advantage, Carragher and junior Mike Stevens set up senior Chris Sparkes to tie the game, 1-1, at the 11:17 mark of the first period. Carragher gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead just over three minutes later when he notched his team-leading ninth goal of the season, and the 50th goal of his career, on another power-play.

New England College 6, Bowdoin 4

HENNIKER, N.H. – New England College used a four-goal second period en route to a 6-4 victory over Bowdoin College Saturday.

The Polar Bears drop their second straight game and fall to 6-2-3 on the year. The Pilgrims improve to 6-5-0 this season.

Bryan Ciborowski gave Bowdoin a first-period lead, but a pair of tallies early in the second frame gave N.E.C. a 2-1 edge. After Mike Collins tied the game for the Polar Bears, consecutive goals by Brian Pouliot gave the Pilgrims a 4-2 edge entering the third period.

Bowdoin evened the score again early in the third period on back-to-back goals from Colin MacCormick and Mike Corbelle with 12:48 remaining. But Jeff Armando found the back of the net for N.E.C. just moments later, and the hosts added another late goal to seal the win. Ron Baia made 32 saves for the Pilgrims, while Chris Rossi stopped 18 shots for the Polar Bears.
