Updating solid waste rules

Issue: A public hearing was held to review proposed updates to the town’s solid waste ordinance, as well as proposed changes to the transfer station rules.

The scoop: The town’s ordinance and rules are about 10 years old, though they were updated about five years ago. The 12-member Solid Waste Committee began work last year to update the rules and bring them into compliance with Maine Department of Environmental Protection standards. Also, the committee hopes to balance transfer station costs among residents in a way that may take the form of additional fees for large-item waste, such as televisions and washing machines.

Up next: Selectmen will review the ordinance changes before discussion and final vote at town meeting. Any changes to the transfer station rules will be adopted by selectmen at a future meeting.

Revaluation options discussed

Issue: Selectmen would like to update assessment records, but hope to avoid a complete town-wide revaluation.

The scoop: Because the town is never more than three years behind in property revaluations, selectmen may decide to simply perform a local housing market analysis and factor a revaluation.

Taxing foreclosures

Issue: About $105,000 in taxes has not been collected from residents. Selectmen voted to send out 25 foreclosure notices by mid-January. In the past month, the town has collected about $1,848 in property taxes.

Search begins for road foreman

Issue: The job description for a new town road foreman is nearing completion and will be submitted for final approval next week.
