LEWISTON – During the winter and spring months, area residents are invited to learn more about other languages and cultures at Lewiston Adult Education.

“American Sign Language” will introduce the elements of basic “Signed English” and American Sign Language. As students learn the language of signing, they will also learn about the deaf culture from instructor Erik Magnussen, a member of the deaf community. Class will begin Tuesday, Jan. 30, for 15 weeks.

“Introduction to Chinese” will allow participants to learn about the Mandarin Chinese language and culture from Qingmei Zheng, native of China. She will introduce the written language and traditions associated with the Chinese New Year. Class will be held for three weeks beginning Monday, Jan. 29.

“Conversational French” is designed for people with little or no knowledge of the language. Classes will focus on dialogue about families, food and travel. It is perfect for those planning to travel or to chat with French-speaking family and friends. The class will be taught by Claire Gamache and will begin Tuesday, Feb. 6, for 10 weeks.

“Conversational Spanish for Beginners” will offer a more in-depth look at the Spanish language. Participants will learn the basics of everyday conversation through guided discussions with Senior Valiente, instructor. The class will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings for 13 weeks.

“Conversational Spanish II” is for those who have the basics down and are looking to increase vocabulary and fluency. The group discussions with help gain experience and confidence. The class will be held Monday and Wednesday evenings for 13 weeks.
