LEWISTON – A smile broke out on the face of Lewiston High School senior Rachel Spilecki upon realizing that the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council had arrived at school to present her with the January Mayoral Citation of Excellence on Jan. 9. Applause broke out in Spilecki’s Latin class and an “All right, Rach” was yelled by a peer in the back row.

Spilecki was recognized for her theatrical talents, school leadership and community involvement. LYAC Liaison City Councilor Norm Rousseau, who was accompanied by youth council members Ally Beaucage and Sara Fabrizio, said, “Rachel, you are commended for your exemplary theatrical abilities to include recently producing ‘The Night of One Acts.’ Your effective leadership in school organizations, to include the speech team, Academic Advocate, the National Honor Society and the French Honor Society, is also a stand-out.

“In addition, you are also hereby recognized for community involvement to include being a panelist for the Prevention of Hate/Bias and serving as a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters.”

Assistant Principal Michael Hutchins also attended the presentation.

Each month the citation is given to a Lewiston Middle School or Lewiston High School student, and nominations for the February citation are due no later than Friday, Feb. 9. A one-page nomination must concern an achievement or accomplishment deemed as “above and beyond” or “extraordinary” that has occurred in the last two months.

Nominations may be submitted to the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council at 27 Pine St., Lewiston, ME 04240, or via [email protected]

After reviewing nominations, a recipient will be selected, and the presentation will be made later in February at the youth’s respective school.
