By a rising vote of 133 to 92, the House adopted an amendment to the legislative, executive and judicial appropriation bill, which was taken from the Speaker’s table with Senate amendments, increasing the salary of the vice president, the speaker and members of the Cabinet to $12,000 per year and those of senators and representatives, delegates from territories and the resident commissioner from Porto Rico, to $7,500 per year, the increases to take effect March 4, 1907.

The Durham stage, which was established by the government more than 21 years ago, is to be discontinued Jan. 31, much to the regret of the people at Durham and along South River Road.

50 Years Ago, 1957

Even though the temperature outside her window read a cool 33 degrees below, Mrs. O’neal Mills reports a blossom on her cotton plant. The plant was raised from a cotton seed that came from Louisiana.

The following disease cases were reported to the Lewiston Health Office during the past week: six cases of mumps, three chickenpox cases, and one each of strep throat, epidemic diarrhea and pneumonia.

25 Years Ago, 1982

A tremor that rumbled through southern Maine “felt like a B&M (train) engine going through my cellar,” said a South Portland man. The tremor, which hit about 7:15 p.m., had its epicenter near Franklin, N.H., and measured 4.8 on the Richter Scale, according to the National Earthquake Information Service in Colorado.

For decades, body building was seen as a man’s sport, and the equipment used to train in the sport was off-limits to women. Not so now. At universities and gymnasiums, at health clubs and spas, the fairer sex is queuing up for time on the Nautilus and the Universal. Women and men are more concerned with physical fitness overall, and in looking fit.
