Dear Sun Spots: Could you find me an address to write Jack Elrod. He writes the Mark Trail saga on your comics page. Thank you. – Michael Melcher, Carthage.

Answer:
You can write to Jack Elrod by addressing: Jack Elrod, c/o King Features, 300 West 57th St., 15th Floor, New York, NY 10019-5238.

Sun Spots thought you might find this interesting: According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, for the past 40 years, Jack Elrod has been associated with the syndicated Mark Trail comic feature. For the past 18 years, he has both written and illustrated the daily and Sunday strips.

Elrod’s Mark Trail comic strip has won more than 30 conservation awards from government agencies and private organizations like the National Wildlife Federation, the U.S. Coast Guard, the National Forest Association, the Georgia Wildlife Association, the American Waterfowl and Wetland Association, and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

For the Fish & Wildlife Service, Elrod has illustrated and written several coloring books which have been distributed to students throughout the nation. They include: Wetlands Coloring Book; Take Pride in America with Mark Trail: A Coloring Book; and Mark Trail Tells the Story of a Fish in Trouble (Illustrated).

In 1991 and 1992, Elrod served as a judge in the Federal Duck Stamp Contest.

For the National Wildlife Federation, Elrod illustrated the 1980 poster which stresses the importance of preserving the nation’s wetlands. A total of 16,500 acres in the Chattahoochee National Forest were reserved by Congress in 1991 as a Mark Trail Wilderness Area. It is the only wilderness area in the nation to be named after a character in a comic strip. A resolution is now (May 1998) pending in Congress to recognize Elrod for his ongoing work in keeping Americans in touch with nature. U.S. representative John Linder from Georgia is sponsoring the bill.

Dear Sun Spots: Can you please print the lyrics to the songs “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again,” and “Tammy.” And, where can one buy the guitar sheet to play it. Is there a song “Celia” or maybe “Cecilia?” Thank you a lot. – No Name, No Town.

Answer:
To answer your last question first, Simon and Garfunkel’s hit is “Cecelia.” Sun Spots hopes you enjoy the lyrics to songs below. You may want to try contacting Carroll’s School and Music Center, 160 Canal St., Lewiston, 782-2545. They may have the music sheets for these songs or can order them for you.

“When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again”

(from www.scoutsongs.com/lyrics/whenjohnnycomesmarchinghome.html)

When Johnny comes marching home again,

Hurrah! Hurrah!

We’ll give him a hearty welcome then

Hurrah! Hurrah!

The men will cheer and the boys will shout

The ladies they will all turn out

And we’ll all feel gay,

When Johnny comes marching home.

The old church bell will peal with joy

Hurrah! Hurrah!

To welcome home our darling boy

Hurrah! Hurrah!

The village lads and lassies say

With roses they will strew the way,

And we’ll all feel gay

When Johnny comes marching home.

Get ready for the Jubilee,

Hurrah! Hurrah!

We’ll give the hero three times three,

Hurrah! Hurrah!

The laurel wreath is ready now

To place upon his loyal brow

And we’ll all feel gay

When Johnny comes marching home.

Debbie Reynold’s lyrics “Tammy”

(from http://www.oldielyrics.com/lyrics/debbie_reynolds/tammy.html)

I hear the cottonwoods whisp’rin’ above

Tammy! Tammy! Tammy’s in love!

The ole hootie owl hootie-hoo’s to the dove

Tammy! Tammy! Tammy’s in love!

Does my darling feel what I feel

When he comes near?

My heart beats so joyfully

You’d think that he could hear!

Wish I knew if he knew what I’m dreaming of!

Tammy! Tammy! Tammy’s in love.
