Music opportunity

AUGUSTA – The Maine Alliance for Arts Education has announced an opportunity for talented high-school and early college music students who are considering orchestral music as a career.

One Maine student will be selected to attend the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute from July 2 through 29. The student will receive a full scholarship, all expenses paid, for the institute, including private lessons, chamber music coaching, performance opportunities in the D.C. area, master classes and seminars, all with members of the National Symphony Orchestra.

Application deadline is Friday, Feb. 9. The program is open, by recorded audition, to students in grades nine to 12 or college students who are entering their freshman or sophomore year as of September 2007. The fellowship is awarded only to students who play the violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone and harp.

Junior Miss program

AUBURN – Maine’s Junior Miss is looking for high school senior women interested in earning money for college to participate in its 2007 program. Volunteers and sponsors are needed as well.

The Maine Junior Miss program will take place March 30 to April 1 in Auburn. The deadline for applications is March 16. The winner will travel to Mobile, Ala., in June to compete for the title of America’s Junior Miss and a share of more than $100,000 in scholarships.

HRH contributes

PORTLAND – HRH Northern New England has announced it will contribute $5,000 to the Center for Grieving Children. Insurance agents from across Maine are joining to raise awareness and lend financial assistance to the center.

Dennis Lundgren, president of HRH Northern New England, said, “David Krug, senior VP of our Auburn office, and Michael Schumacher, senior account executive of our Portland office, are spearheading an effort to rally the local insurance industry to support this initiative.” The donation will benefit the center’s capital campaign.
