LEWISTON – American Legion Post 22 will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at the Multi-Purpose Center, 145 Birch St.

The meeting will include two programs. The 198th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, will be celebrated and the 64th anniversary of the sinking of the U.S. Army Transport U.S.S. Dorchester off the coast of Greenland will be recalled.

There, four U.S. Army Chaplains gave their life belts to soldiers who had left theirs below decks. The chaplains stood on the aft-deck of the Dorchester with arms around each other singing and praying as they went down with the ship.

The agenda will also include an update membership and finances. Certificates for long service in the Legion will be presented to deserving members.

Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation will be read by Richard Giem, Post 22 judge advocate. Post Adjutant Jerry DerBoghosian will tell the story of the four chaplains.

Refreshments will be served. All members attending should have paid 2007 membership cards. For more information, contact Commander Gerald Labrie at 795-6821 or Jerry DerBoghosian at 782-5700.
