NORWAY – Saturday afternoon’s public supper at the Norway Fire Department was interrupted when firefighters had to rush off to a reported structure fire at a trailer on Hidden Acres Road.
That quick response was credited with preventing a small fire from turning into something bigger at the home of Thomas and Carol Turner off Greenwood Road.
“It could have been worse if they hadn’t gotten there as quick as they did,” Third Assistant Chief James Tibbetts said Saturday evening.
An overheated extension cord strung under the 16-by-70-foot, newer-model trailer started the fire at about 4:30 p.m. The flames burned insulation, creating a cloud of black smoke, Tibbetts said.
After extinguishing the flames, firefighters returned to the station and resumed serving meals at the monthly gathering.
