FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) – Daisuke Matsuzaka is more than just an outstanding pitcher.

He showed Wednesday that he’s also a pretty good fielder.

“He’s as quick as anybody I’ve ever seen,” Boston spring training instructor and minor-league pitching coach Goose Gregson said. “His reaction times are tremendously quick.”

Gregson, starting his 24th year as a pro pitching coach, hit grounders to Matsuzaka and other pitchers during a fielding drill. They charged bunts, covered first base on grounders and backed up the first baseman on double play balls.

Matsuzaka and Japanese lefty Hideki Okajima, also in his first year with the Red Sox, pounced on bunts quickly and that could cut down the number of opposing runners who reach scoring position.

“We’ve been told they are so quick off the mound that there will probably be a refresher course with middle infielders” to remind them to cover second base, Gregson said.

Matsuzaka and Okajima “get to the bunt so quickly that they have a chance of getting the lead runner.”

Pitchers are generally told to get the out at first if they’re not sure they can throw out the runner at second.

“These guys are getting to the ball so quickly that, in their mind, they know that they can get that lead out,” Gregson said. “It’s fun to watch.”
