DIXFIELD – After 14 months on the job in Maine, Town Manager Jeff Jacobson is going home.
Jacobson, a Minnesota native, submitted his resignation at Tuesday night’s selectmen’s meeting, effective March 27.
He has accepted a position as city administrator in Biwabik, Minn., a ski area north of his hometown of Paynesville. He is expected to begin his job on or around April 2.
“We wanted to get back to family and our hometown,” he said Wednesday afternoon.
The Dixfield position paid $42,000. He said his new position will pay more than that. His contract with Dixfield expires in October; however, it contains a clause allowing a resignation with 30 days notice.
Jacobson became Dixfield’s town manager following an experiment between that town and neighboring Mexico where the two communities tried sharing one town manager for about six months.
During Jacobson’s tenure, Dixfield continued to try to share services with Mexico by contracting with the Mexico Water District to operate Dixfield’s water system. That agreement expires at the end of the week and the town is searching for an operator to manage both the water and sewer departments.
The board decided Tuesday night to extend the deadline for applicants for the water/sewer operator to March 16.
Jacobson said the board set a special selectmen’s meeting for 6 p.m., Monday, March 5, to discuss requirements and the process for hiring a new town manager. As in the past, several residents will likely become part of the Town Manager Hiring Committee, which also includes the selectmen.
The board is operating with four members, with Bettina Martin serving as chairwoman. No one sought to fill the opening left by former Selectman Tony Carter when he resigned several months ago because of a job relocation.
None of the selectmen who attended Tuesday’s meeting could be reached for comment by late Wednesday afternoon.
