NEW YORK (AP) – Corinne Goldsmith began posting videos of her 5-year-old daughter singing and dancing on a popular Web site for friends and family in New York to be able to watch the youngster grow up.
What happened next was not what she expected. The videos of the pig-tailed girl on YouTube.com grabbed the attention of viewers worldwide, sending the kindergartner on her way to stardom.
For example, the video performance of Nia Frazier singing Earth, Wind & Fire’s hit “Can’t Find Love” has attracted more than 2 million viewers. It also led to the group inviting her to perform with them onstage later this month in Las Vegas.
“I like being on stage very much because I get to sing and dance and do whatever I want,” Nia told the Daily News in Sunday’s edition. “I dance every day.”
That dancing and singing appears to have paid off – literally. Nia’s performance of the Mary J. Blige song “Enough Cryin”‘ got that artist’s attention, too, landing the girl a paying job in a commercial for the Grammy-winning R&B singer’s album “Reflections.”
All the attention cast on Nia has bewildered and has made her parents proud.
“Honestly, I only expected my friends and family to click on it,” said Goldsmith, 36, a molecular biologist raised in the Bronx.
Nia’s father, 58-year-old Glenn Frazier, said the little girl has always been into music and enjoys performing. “She’s a very quick child,” said the retired Long Island Rail Road conductor raised in Queens. “We are very proud of her.”
There are about 30 videos of Nia on YouTube but its the Earth, Wind & Fire performance that is among her most popular.
“I’ve been playing Earth, Wind & Fire for Nia since I was pregnant with her,” Goldsmith said.
But Nia’s parents told the Daily News that their priority for their daughter is a good education. The youngster is good with languages, even performing a Brazilian pop song in a recent video, her parents said.
“It’s been wonderful,” Goldsmith said. “I’ve gotten positive emails from Poland, from Japan, from Holland. She’s just gotten all over the place.”
