FARMINGTON – The “Ladies of the Lake” will give a concert in Nordica Auditorium at the University of Maine at Farmington at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 17.
Ladies of the Lake specialize in traditional Celtic instrumental music and ballad singing, with ancient ballads, rounds, songs of the sea, and songs with a rousing chorus where audiences can join in. Concerts include music on the fiddle, flute, tin whistle, button accordion, guitar, bodhran and piano.
Making up the group are Ellen Gawler, fiddle; Sharon Pyne, wooden flute, tin whistle, bodhran; Maggie Ericson, vocals, button accordion, guitar; and Surya Mitchell, piano, vocals.
Ladies of the Lake will play traditional music from Ireland, ranging from the very melodic, flowing music of the southwestern County Clare, to the less melodic, “choppier” sounds of the music of County Donegal, where the terrain is very jagged and the seaside cliffs are high and rocky. They will also play some newly written tunes, children’s street songs, ballads, and two tunes by contemporary composer Liz Carroll, from the Irish community of Chicago.
The Franklin County Fiddlers will open the show with a short selection of their favorite tunes.
Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for senior citizens, and free for ages 15 and under. There are no advance ticket sales. For more information, call 645-2157.
