MONMOUTH – A fire destroyed an uninsured century-old farmhouse Tuesday and drove two brothers from their home, fire officials said.

Kyle Smith told firefighters he had just stoked his wood stove at his Wilson Pond Road home in North Monmouth about 7:45 a.m. when he realized there was a fire in the chimney. He went outside to the well to draw a bucket of water because there was no running water in the home, said Monmouth Fire Chief Andre Poulin.

By the time Smith got back to the house, the fire had spread into the wall, he told firefighters. From there, it climbed into the attic of the two-story building.

Smith called 911. By the time fire crews arrived shortly before 8 a.m., the blaze had already spread to the second floor and attic, Poulin said. There were no hydrants nearby, so firefighters had to draw water from a mill pond about a mile away, then pump from tankers, he said.

They knocked down the blaze, saving a large barn that housed several head of cattle and hay, Poulin said.

The home was a total loss, he said.

“They’ve lost everything,” he said. “All their personal possessions were damaged by water, fire or smoke.”

No one was injured, Poulin said. Both brothers got out of the house.

The two men are expected to stay with Smith’s son, who lives in North Monmouth, Poulin said. The farmhouse had been passed down to Smith from his father, Poulin said.

The fire was brought under control at about 10 a.m. Fire crews cleared the scene at about 1 p.m., Poulin said.

Towns providing mutual aid were: Wales, Leeds, Greene, Sabattus and Winthrop.
