The House of Representatives was the center of attraction in Augusta. Every aisle, the space in from of the diaz and the two galleries were choked completely with the people who wanted to see what the House would do with the proposition to change its seat of government to Portland. Report “A” is in favor of changing the seat of government to Portland. On a yea and nay vote the House declined to accept report “A” in concurrence with the Senate by a vote of 73 to 65. This leaves the proposition to move the State House to Portland dead for the present at least.

50 years ago, 1957

This is National Wildlife Week, and while the event might not be of engrossing interest to crowded urban States like Delaware and Connecticut, it has outstanding significance for Maine. Perhaps the value of our wildlife, from the Atlantic sea salmon to the predatory wildcat, has never been estimated, and in any event it would be a difficult thing to do. It is safe to say that all these diversified species represent an economic asset of great worth, a natural resource not many other States are fortunate enough to enjoy.

25 years ago, 1982

Street lights in Mechanic Falls removed during the last year as a result of action at last year’s town meeting, were ordered restored in a vote at the annual town meeting. But in a following action, voters refused to appropriate the $12,000 estimated as the amount necessary to restore the lights.

• Desi Arnez was the king of the Cuban beat again when he entered Miami’s Orange Bowl pounding on a conga drum and singing, “Cumba, Cumba, Cumba, Cumbanchero.” Arnez and his children, Lucie and Desi Jr., did a number at “Carnaval Miami” that took the audience of 30,000 back to the heyday of Havana’s Tropical Club.
