LEWISTON – Freshman Nick Woods scored the first nine points of his collegiate career as Bates pummeled the University of Souther Maine, 23-4, Monday in the first varsity men’s lacrosse game ever played between the two schools.
Woods tallied six goals and three assists to lead the Bobcats (3-1). Nick Sampson and Matt Erisman added three goals apiece, while Tyler Moore, David Barrett and P.J. Arroyo each chipped in with two goals. Zach Farmanis paced USM (0-2) with two goals.

St. Mary’s 17, USM 6
SAINT MARY’S CITY, Md. – Freshman had a career day for the St. Mary’s (Md.) College women’s lacrosse team in its 17-6 victory over the University of Southern Maine.
Branch notched three goals and three assists as St. Mary’s pulled away in the second half. Jen Landez and Jess Knight scored two goals apiece for the Huskies (0-2), while Sarah Trent and Virginia Flood tallied the other goals. Katie Quartuccio posted 22 saves for USM.

USM sweeps pair
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of Southern Maine pounded out 19 hits in two games to earn a pair of wins in the Gene Cusic Classic Monday. The Huskies downed SUNY-Potsdame, 8-3, in their opener, then pounded Oberlin College, 11-1, in five innings.
USM broke open a tight 2-1 game in the opener with six runs in the top of the seventh. Christen Lachapelle gave the Huskies the lead with a two-run triple in the third. All of the runs in the seventh came with two outs, as Magan Blais stroked a two-run single and Katie Martell lined a two-run triple.
Evon Hudspeth led the Huskies attack against Oberlin, driving in four runs, including a three-run homer as USM (4-4) opened a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Danielle Potvin earned her first collegiate victory scattered five hits over five solid innings of work.
