HARRISON – A Norway man was flown to a Lewiston hospital Friday night with injuries suffered when he crashed a dirt bike into a rock beside Maple Ridge Road, Cumberland County Deputy Josh Potvin said.

John Small, 38, of Eddie Kahkonen Road sustained head and chest injuries, Potvin said, and was initially cared for by PACE Ambulance before being flown by helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center, he said.

A nursing supervisor said Small was in stable condition at 9:30 p.m. Friday.

Small was riding an unregistered 2003 Yamaha bike owned by Gary Catalano, 29, of 954 Maple Ridge Road in Harrison when the accident occurred about 6:20 p.m., the deputy reported.

Headed north on the road, Small lost control of the bike, and “it left the road, went into a ditch and struck a large rock on the side of the road due to excessive speed,” Potvin said.

The accident remains under investigation. Assisting Potvin were Deputy Derek Brill and Sgt. David Hall.
